these few weeks have been really exciting...

happy things, not so happy things

he left us all so suddenly, it was so unexpected

and it's in times like these that you realize that words can either cut you so deep you don't want to care anymore or it can give you hope.

last Christmas Eve, grandma went home to be with the Lord and less than 4 months later, grandpa left us too.

truth to be told, no one can really understand this sorrow

why?

because many don't really spend time with their grandparents.

well, for me...its a whole different story

they took care of me when i was young i still can remember

it seemed like not too long ago

they fetched me back from kindergarten in one of the best cars of that time

the Honda Civic...white, clean, new :)

i remember once grandma was mopping the floor and she told me not to run cause i would slip and fall

and knowing mischievious me, i did exactly the opposite

and yes, i fell flat on my butt!

i remember how everytime we'd go back to visit for Chinese New Year

grandma would cook up a storm and i miss her fried chicken.

they're the best!

grandpa, i'd miss the times you talk to me about life.

the lessons you've taught me

i will carry them on the tablet of my heart. i will.

so yea, the past week had been quite a hectic one for me...

with Summatives II ending on Friday

Saturday was spent on breakkie in the morning with a good friend. thank you!

and the afternoon, shopping for ingredients to make my "famous" potato salad

in the evening, i started packing packing for my 3 days 3 nights posting to Kuala Kubu Bharu

on Sunday, i had church...taught Sunday School and then had to rush down to Uni to catch the bus at 3pm.

we found the "famous" ice-cream waffle everyone's talking about.

well, honestly, to me...it tasted just normal. it was however really cheap.

well, on Thursday, back in Uni, we had class from 9am till 4pm.
you could have guessed...all of us were not really concentrating.
KKB was educational but it was really tiring too.
then on Thursday night, my siblings had their Awards Night at Grace PJ.

then on Saturday, i went for a 1-day Mission Trip to Carey Island.
Ps. Henry K. Pillai is the man behind this Community Work with Ps. Maniam assisting him - where every other week, teachers from the mother church will be brought in to give the kids in Carey Island English tuition.
It started (2006) with 7 children and now (2009) over 120 kids attend the tuition classes every single week.
The 1-day Mission Trip was actually a Grace Carey Island Community Day for the people there.

One day a wealthy family man took his son on a trip to the country so he could have his son see how poor country people were.

They stayed one day and one night in the farmhouse of a very humble farm.

On the way back home at the end of the trip the father asked the son, "What did you think of the trip?"

The son replied, "Very nice, Dad."

The father then asked, "Did you noticed how poor they were?"

The son replied, "Yes, I guess so."The father then added, "And what did you learn?"

To this question, the son thought for a moment and answered slowly,

"I learned that we have one dog in the house and they have four.

Dear Summer,

I really, really miss you. Just when I thought ur friend, Spring was going to pay me a visit, winter winds and chills came instead this weekend. Summer, I know you are 5 months away, but could you please speed things up? I am eagerly awaiting ur arrival like a kid anticipating Santa.

I am not as content as the nights are long and days far too short. The cold winds and erratic rains doesn’t make it any more pleasant either. I hate waking up with no sunlight through my window and going to class in the cold dark mornings. Though I love my beanie and scarf dearly, I would very much prefer flip flop and shorts, please. I want to be in the field, where the sun is shining through green trees and I want to go indulge myself in summer fruits, strawberries, cherries and mangoes and the list can go on forever.

I do admit, I’ll leave as soon as you appear. But would you please come a bit earlier this year and kick winter in the butt? And I also admit that you get on my nerves, when it’s too hot and I get sticky. And it sometimes get so hot it’s unbearable and it feels so exasperatingly unbearable with the sun burning down so fiercely that I then wish for you to go away, but I do want you here. I love the sunshine. I love the longer days and I especially love the happiness you bring.

I miss you summer. Do come back soon.

so in between all the cranioanatomy surgery, consultations with important people diagnosed with the simpliest medical condition, dealing with nurses and all sorts of traumas that would come bursting through the swinging doors of the ER, take time and realise that sometimes, often enough, all you need is cupped hands with water to save a life.

here i am up in the middle of the night with my instant but very yummy teh-tarik planning to study but also itching to write something here. My sleeping timetable has been a bit out of whack and thoughts just keep popping in my head. Absurd ones. Ones that don’t make sense. And some that are crystal clear. I’ve been talking to you and something’s just been swimming in my head and I can’t really seem to put my finger on it.
Then suddenly i realised, I love you.

With all the expectations attached to that, i still feel the same way after typing it out.

And by the way this, post wasn’t planned to be like this.

I love you, and there’s all that all that touchy feely stuff we never really got into. Well here it is now.

The touchy feely emotional stuff. The things that end with a hug.

But that’s not really me, neither is it you.

we’re the silent love ones. Well, I love you, silently but wholeheartedly.

In the search of love from partners whom we thought were ideal, I think it brought us closer together.

We had our times, looking for the one to make us happy,

the one who would attempt to hold our hand and we won’t feel like pulling away,

the one who provides very addictively witty conversation late at night,

it's an overwhelming feeling, when you've plunged from the protective environment of first year, that raw, naive feeling's lost and you're suddenly, without any warning,into second year, dealing with real fee paying clients and a whole deal of responsibility.
from planning assessments, therapy and pacifying children to open up, talk to you, suddenly this doesn't seem in your league. the whole course seem out of reach. like you're being hit by a whirlwind of responsibilities, knowledge and only you can find your way out of that.

as you walk out of the hall with all this extra baggage not only orbiting around your head but dragging you down, ball and chain style, it drizzles.
a steady, almost rhythmic fall of rain, just lightly caressing your lashes, lips and softly placing droplets on your hair, you realise. it'll not be that bad after all. beauty's right out of your hall.

you just have to look, much harder than ever before.

i'm still fiercely protective of all my late night catch up sessions with old friends *whom i have been meeting for the past 3 months!*
one of these meet ups even ended up on that eye on malaysia thingy which is an ironic name because you barely even see half of malacca from that huge-ferris-wheel-they-call-an-eye let alone malaysia! pics plagarised from aaron's blog, sorry i don't know how to link so this is prob d best acknowledgement i can give!

it was all good fun though, with our 50% discount for being an anak malaysia & talking the whole time while annoying the hell out of the old-coupld-who-were-pak-toh-ing & sharing our carousel! *i'm actually not sure whether it's meant to be called a carousel, anyway it's those bola bola things that we got into*

Over the weekend, Victoria suffered her worst ever bushfire disaster in Australian history. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd described it as “hell in all its fury”, but gave warning that the number of dead was expected to climb higher than the 181 confirmed now.

Authorities said more destruction is inevitable as more than 20 fires are still burning in the state.

There are almost 200 people dead, almost 800 homes destroyed, and 5000 people homeless.
Entire towns have been wiped off the map, with aerial images of the region showing an eerie moonscape of blackened earth and collapsed homes where fields and communities used to stand.

My heart breaks.

With strong winds and temperatures soaring to 47C (116F), fire storms swept through small towns and country properties, wiping out everything in their path in only minutes.

While disaster continue to strike, destroying livelihoods and wiping out homes, true unsung heroes continue to save not only men, but creatures of the wild too. It's not only our homes that are destroyed.

BN ready to form new govt in Perak, says PM

 4 Feb 09 :  9.12PM

PUTRAJAYA, 4 Feb 2009: The Barisan Nasional (BN) is ready to form a new government in Perak following four assemblypersons in the state quitting their parties to support the BN, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

"We wish extend our thanks if they have taken the decision to state their support for the BN, the BN accepts and we say thank you," he told press conference here today.

The four are the assemblypersons for Behrang and Changkat Jering, Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi and Mohd Osman Jailu respectively from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Jelapang assemblyperson Hee Yit Foong from DAP, and Bota assemblyperson Datuk Nasaruddin Hashim who joined PKR 10 days ago but returned to Umno today.

"If we (BN) have the numbers, of course we will take the step (to form the new government)," said Abdullah, who is also BN chairman, when commenting on the BN having a simple majority to replace the Pakatan Rakyat government in Perak following the development.

With this latest development, the BN now has 28 seats in the state assembly, Pakatan Rakyat also 28 and independents three seats.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak at a separate press conference earlier today, had said that although the BN had the same number of seats as the Pakatan Rakyat, it could form the government in Perak because the three independents had stated their support for the BN including in the choice of Menteri Besar from among the BN assemblymen.

On whether BN would consider holding a snap election in Perak, Abdullah said this came under the powers of the Sultan of Perak.

However, he said, Najib would be seeking an audience with Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak to inform the Sultan that the BN now had the majority in the state legislative assembly.

Asked if the BN would move a vote of no confidence in the present government, Abdullah said it had not been decided yet but remained an option.

Asked if the people of Perak would accept the BN re-administering the state, he said it was up to them.

He, however, believed what was more important for Perakians to have a government that could provide stability and progress.

Asked if the matter of the Behrang and Changkat Jering assemblymen who are facing charges of corruption would affect the image of Umno, he said so far they had not been found guilty.

Asked further if the BN had a candidate in mind for the Menteri Besar post in Perak, Abdullah said : "Be patient". — Bernama

it was a whole day thing. i woke up at 0530 and was out till almost 2000.

i thank God for very nice people who take the trouble to provide transport.

it's the thought that counts

have you ever had friends who give you presents and say to you, "happy birthday girl, i hope you like the present, it's the thought that counts!" well, i have friends like that but thank God only a handful, or not i'd not be getting many good gifts. *laughs* honestly, i really dislike this phrase a lot. a lot as in a lot a lot! why would the giver of the gift be saying it? doesn't it seem more logical if it were uttered by the receiver?

you get what i mean? many times, the giver of the gift uses this phrase to cover-up for the 'miserable' gift they give to their friends. Most times, these gifts are gifts-they-received-from-their-other-friends-which-is-too-useless-to-be-kept-but-too-wasteful-to-be-thrown-away. so what do they do with it??? you probably would have guessed right ;)

well, i was just reading a very good book just now *i will share more in the next post* and somewhere in the middle of the book, the author actually addressed this matter of gifts and thoughts. The chapter starts with him saying, "and speaking of gifts, i should tell you a rule...You know, it's not true that what counts is the thought and not the gift. It just isn't true. My mother always pulled my leg on that one. I have collected so much gift-wrapped trash over the years from people who copped out and hurriedly bought a little plastic cheapie to give under the protective flag of good thoughts. I tell you, it is the gift that counts. Or, rather, people who think good thoughts give good gifts"

i couldn's agree more. a loud amen from my side!

He even gave a classic example...Jesus. He said that God did not just send an angel or just some good, great, macho warrior to save the human-race...He sent His only begotten Son - His very best!

there was this one time i remember vividly...i went shopping for gifts with my mie, we were to get a birthday gift for her friend. Guess what mie got her? Gold earrings from Poh Kong!!! Solid heavy ones mind you, not those hollow empty light ones. I was puzzled, to me, it was a waste of money. In a somewhat frustrated tone, i asked mie, "why must we buy such expensive things for her? it's just a birthday present la?!!!" then she said something i will never forget, she told me, "girl, always get for people what you would like them get for you - remember the Golden Rule? abide by it, you can never go wrong!"

A teacher in New York decided to honor each of her seniors in high school by telling them the difference they each made. She called each student to the front of the class, one at a time.

First she told each of them how they had made a difference to her and the class. Then she presented each of them with a blue ribbon imprinted with gold letters, which read, "Who I Am Makes a Difference."

Afterwards the teacher decided to do a class project to see what kind of impact recognition would have on a community. She gave each of the students three more ribbons and instructed them to go out and spread this acknowledgment ceremony. Then they were to follow up on the results, see who honored whom and report back to the class in about a week.

One of the boys in the class went to a junior executive in a nearby company and honored him for helping him with his career planning. He gave him a blue ribbon and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two extra ribbons and said, "We're doing a class project on recognition, and we'd like you to go out, find somebody to honor, give them a blue ribbon, then give them the extra blue ribbon so they can acknowledge a third person to keep this acknowledgment ceremony going. Then please report back to me and tell me what happened."

Later that day the junior executive went in to see his boss, who had been noted, by the way, as being kind of a grouchy fellow. He sat his boss down and he told him that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. The boss seemed very surprised. The junior executive asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon and would he give him permission to put it on him.

His surprised boss said, "Well, sure." The junior executive took the blue ribbon and placed it right on his boss's jacket above his heart. As he gave him the last extra ribbon, he asked, "Would you do me a favor? Would you take this extra ribbon and pass it on by honoring somebody else? The young boy who first gave me the ribbons is doing a project in school and we want to keep this recognition ceremony going and find out how it affects people."

That night the boss came home to his 14-year-old son and sat him down. He said, "The most incredible thing happened to me today. I was in my office and one of the junior executives came in and told me he admired me and gave me a blue ribbon for being a creative genius. Imagine. He thinks I'm a creative genius. Then he put this blue ribbon that says "Who I Am Makes a Difference," on my jacket above my heart. He gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to honor. As I was driving home tonight, I started thinking about whom I would honor with this ribbon and I thought about you. I want to honor you. My days are really hectic and when I come home I don't pay a lot of attention to you. Sometimes I scream at you for not getting good enough grades in school and for your bedroom being a mess, but somehow tonight, I just wanted to sit here and, well, just let you know that you do make a difference to me. Besides your mother, you are the most important person in my life. You're a great kid and I love you!"

The startled boy started to sob and sob, and he couldn't stop crying. His whole body shook. He looked up at his father and said through his tears, "Dad, earlier tonight I sat in my room and wrote a letter to you and Mom explaining why I had killed myself and asking you to forgive me. I was going to commit suicide tonight after you were asleep. I just didn't think that you cared at all. The letter is upstairs. I don't think I need it after all."

His father walked upstairs and found a heartfelt letter full of anguish and pain. The envelope was addressed, "Mom and Dad."

The boss went back to work a changed man. He was no longer a grouch, but made sure to let all his employees know that they made a difference. The junior executive helped several other young people with career planning and never forgot to let them know that they made a difference in his life... one being the boss's son.

the title isn't a mistake if you were wondering. are you m.a.d? are you making a difference?

when i read one of my close friend's personal message on msn which goes like this...

'the fragility of life reminds me that there's more to life than just books.'

i couldn't agree more! especially when one's exam falls on no better time of the year - 31st of December.

but then as i ponder further, i begin to ask myself...

am i just agreeing with it because of the current circumstances i am in?

or do i really realise with full convictions that there is more to life than what i can behold with my naked eye?
