"He smiled understandingly-much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced--or seemed to face--the whole external world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

- came across this section while i was reading & suddenly thought about you know how in the movies a girl would be walking on the opposite of the street of the boy of her dreams. she'll be walking past lovers and old couples holding hands and sharing a salad while she'll be thinking of her boy, the boy on the opposite side of the street.
in the movie, they'll always meet in the end.
but what if they don't?
i'm glad you're on the same street as me, at least for now. -
